Did you know that eucalyptus trees grow more than six feet in a single year? It’s true! And it’s one of the reasons Sappi Verve uses them to make its dissolving pulp, which is transformed into viscose and other products. On today’s episode, Krelyne Andrew, Sappi Verve’s General Manager of Sustainability, explains the many benefits of eucalyptus trees and the company’s other responsible practices.
Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff: Have you ever smelled eucalyptus — you know that powerful minty scent that just clears your head and melts away all that tension in your body? Well, now imagine a forest full of it.
So, you’re surrounded by eucalyptus trees. Do you still love that smell, or are you over it?
Krelyne Andrew: I love it. [laughs] I love it, but I don’t get to be in the eucalyptus plantation that much.
RLS: Meet Krelyne Andrew, the general manager of sustainability for Sappi Verve.
KA: I often say to people that I’ve been at the company for three rotations of the eucalyptus tree.
RLS: That’s about 20 years. Every year, in South Africa and North America, Sappi Verve produces 1.4 million tons of dissolving pulp from certified, sustainably managed trees, including eucalyptus.
KA: The products that we make are used in everyday life; you know, it touches our lives every day.
RLS: In this episode, we’re going to explore how Sappi Verve uses every part of the tree to support their circular manufacturing goals.
