Governance

Cascale’s governance framework is driven by member insight, transparency, and equitable representation. As a global multi-stakeholder nonprofit, we bring together diverse voices from across the consumer goods value chain to shape decisions that support industry transformation and collective action.

Governance Principles

Cascale’s approach to governance is guided by four core principles:

Community

We draw on the experience and expertise of our members to inform decisions that benefit the coalition.

Inclusion

We apply a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) lens to ensure broad and fair representation across all stakeholder groups.

Equity

We treat all member types equally, recognizing power dynamics across the value chain and striving for balanced influence.

Transparency

We openly share how decisions are made, so members and partners can engage with confidence and clarity.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors provides strategic direction, financial oversight, and governance for Cascale as a nonprofit membership organization. It plays a key role in ensuring that Cascale’s strategic priorities remain aligned with its purpose, mission, and vision.

Board Composition

  • The Board includes nine elected representatives, with three seats each for the affiliate, brand & retailer, and manufacturer member caucuses.
  • Board elections are held annually; Board Directors are elected by and from their respective member caucuses (member category).
  • Organizations may only have one representative on the Board at a time.

Board Responsibilities

  • Approve Cascale’s long-term strategies and priorities.
  • Monitor financial performance and uphold fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Create and maintain the governing policies to address the broadest levels of strategic decisions and situations.
  • Supports the CEO’s leadership of the organization.

Strategic Councils

Strategic Councils are advisory groups that provide expert input on important topics related to Cascale’s mission. Councils help guide Cascale’s programs and tools with perspectives from across the value chain.

Each Council includes 8–12 members in good standing, who are selected through an application process. Members are selected to represent diverse company types, regions, and experiences. Participants share their insights in a personal capacity, not as company representatives.

Member Expert Teams & Consultations

In addition to Cascale’s core governance bodies, Member Expert Teams (METs) and member consultations provide targeted, timely input on specific initiatives. METs are formed on an as-needed basis to provide technical expertise on specific topics, such as tool methodology, verification, or member guidance. These groups are time-bound and composed of individuals with relevant experience from across Cascale’s membership.

Cascale also engages members through broader consultation processes, caucus-led feedback, and informal input sessions, ensuring that all member types have opportunities to shape decisions, raise concerns, and influence direction. This flexible, multi-layered approach allows Cascale to remain collaborative, inclusive, and responsive to member needs.

    Examples of previous MET topics
  • 01
Enhancing Cascale’s Higg Index tools and methodologies
  • 02
    Developing guidance and training resources
  • 03
Aligning on policy priorities and public affairs strategies across regions
