Better Cotton has recently announced that it will become a regenerative standard within the next year, strengthening its ongoing commitment to protect and restore the environment and improve conditions for cotton farming communities around the world.

In line with our commitment to constantly improving our standards and driving greater sustainability within the cotton sector, we are now working to close any remaining gaps – making minor updates to the Principles & Criteria (P&C) over the coming year to ensure we are formally aligned with commonly accepted frameworks for regenerative cotton production. Better Cotton is developing a reporting framework which is what we will call the reporting pillar. Part of the transition process will involve revising our evidence framework which will cover our success on practice adoption of regenerative practices. We are still in the process of defining how this data will be shared, with consultation key to identifying and “defining what matters” when reporting on data and outcomes for regenerative standards and this roundtable will deep dive into these themes.

As retailers, the majority of GHG emissions come from the products we sell, and the majority of those products typically come from brand partners. While established brand partners will have climate action targets and programs in place, small to medium-sized brands may not. For those brands, managing expectations of multiple retail partners can be difficult.

At the same time, formal feedback tools like the Better Buying Purchasing Practices Index (BBPPI) still see limited uptake. Why? And what can suppliers themselves, along with associations, federations, and regional networks, do to reclaim space for meaningful voice? This session centers on the supply side: exploring the barriers that prevent participation, the role of fear and fatigue, and the potential of collective, anonymized feedback channels. Together, we’ll share real experiences and co-develop strategies for strengthening supplier-led engagement mechanisms that are safe, effective, and capable of driving change.

Understanding forest, land-use, and agriculture (FLAG) emissions is a growing topic within Scope 3 greenhouse gas footprinting. This session will walk through a methodology for estimating baseline FLAG emissions alongside Higg Index data, followed by a workshop on key needs to integrate FLAG data into your Scope 3 calculations.

Cascale conducted a pilot series of manufacturer roundtables in Pakistan, a key production hub and High-FEM-identified emissions hotspot, to advance decarbonization efforts. In June and July 2025, we engaged 16 leading manufacturers representing over 1.8 megatons of annual GHG emissions and about 31% of verified FEM facilities in the country.

These workshops provided a solutions-focused forum for brainstorming collective decarbonization opportunities in Pakistan addressing Scope 1 and 2, and Scope 3 emissions. As a result of the workshop eight “Pakistan Decarbonization Opportunities” specific to the local Pakistan context were identified by manufacturers.

Learnings

The consumer goods industry currently lacks a unified definition of Foundational Environmental Performance (FEP), resulting in inconsistent expectations. Cascale started a consultation process amongst its members, external stakeholders and standard holders to establish an industry-aligned definition of Foundational Environmental Performance for credible and scalable environmental action. A definition of FEP aims to create consistency, reduce audit fatigue, and strengthen industry-wide sustainability efforts.

Post-Event Actions

We encourage participants to advocate for the adoption of FEP within their networks to drive broader industry alignment. Additionally, we invite them to collaborate with Cascale and other stakeholders to refine and implement the framework in a meaningful way, ensuring its effectiveness in driving credible and scalable environmental action across the industry.

This closed-door roundtable will bring together key Cascale members to discuss the practical realities of complying with the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The session will be divided into two focused segments. First, participants will identify common CSRD pain points and reporting challenges, with the aim of communicating them to policymakers and standard setters for greater clarity and support. Second, members will share feedback on the Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM), highlighting where it falls short in supporting CSRD environmental disclosures and where improvement is needed.

Learnings:

• Identify the top barriers to CSRD reporting across E1–E5 and which areas require regulatory clarification.
• Capture industry-aligned feedback on the technical and practical limitations of the Higg FEM tool.
• Explore how brands and manufacturers are currently using FEM to support CSRD disclosures — and where it’s falling short.
• Lay the groundwork for industry input into future guidance and tool enhancements.
